Prerequisites: Before diving in, it helps to have already tried some form of blended learning — like station rotations — and feel comfortable managing students on devices. If you haven't, check out our
Getting Started with Blended Learning guide first.
What you'll learn:
- How to use data from EdTech tools to identify student needs
- The three tiers of differentiation and how to address each digitally
- Specific platforms built for differentiation
- How to manage differentiated digital tasks without overwhelming yourself
Why Digital Tools Make Differentiation More Manageable
Differentiation — meeting every student at their individual learning level — is one of the most powerful teaching practices out there. It's also one of the most time-consuming to execute manually. You can only create so many versions of a worksheet.
This is where EdTech genuinely earns its place. Many platforms automatically adjust difficulty based on how a student is performing, provide you with data dashboards showing exactly where each student is struggling, and let you assign different tasks to different students in just a few clicks.
Step 1: Know Your Three Tiers
When differentiating, think about your students in three broad groups at any given time. These groupings shift constantly — a student might be below grade level in fractions but above grade level in geometry.
🟡 Approaching Grade Level
- Need scaffolded support
- Benefit from extra practice on foundational skills
- May need audio support or visual cues
🟢 At Grade Level
- Core curriculum is the right fit
- Benefit from variety in how they practice
- Good candidates for peer collaboration
🔵 Above Grade Level
- Need extension and enrichment
- Risk disengagement if under-challenged
- Benefit from open-ended, creative tasks
Step 2: Use Your Data Dashboard Before Assigning
Most EdTech platforms generate performance reports automatically. Before you assign the next digital activity, spend 5–10 minutes reading your data. Here's what to look for:
- Mastery percentage by skill: Which skills are students consistently getting below 70%? That signals a gap to address before moving on.
- Time on task: A student who finishes very quickly may need a harder version; one who takes much longer may need scaffolding.
- Individual student reports: Platforms like IXL and Lexia Core5 show a detailed breakdown per student — use these once a week, not every day.
⚠️ Data Overload Warning
You do not need to review every data point. Pick one or two metrics that matter most to your current unit. Weekly check-ins are enough — daily data review burns teachers out quickly.
Step 3: Assign Differentiated Digital Tasks
Once you know who needs what, here's how to act on it using digital tools:
-
Use adaptive platforms for automatic differentiation
Tools like IXL, Lexia Core5, and Khan Academy adjust difficulty in real time based on student responses. Assign the platform, not a specific level — let the algorithm do the differentiation work for you.
-
Create tiered assignments in Google Classroom or Schoology
Both platforms let you assign the same task to specific students or groups. Create two versions of a worksheet (one with sentence starters, one without) and assign each to the right group. Students only see their version.
-
Use flexible choice boards
A choice board is a 3×3 grid of activity options at varying complexity levels. Post it digitally in your LMS. Students choose tasks that match their readiness. Tools like Google Slides or Canva make them easy to design.
-
Provide scaffolded supports within the digital task itself
Embed audio instructions using tools like Nearpod or Book Creator, add glossary hyperlinks for vocabulary support, or include worked example videos for students who need a model.

✅ Differentiation Checklist Before the Week Begins:
- Reviewed last week's data dashboard (10 min)
- Identified 2–3 students who need intervention and 2–3 who need extension
- Assigned appropriate platform or task to each group in LMS
- Prepared one scaffolded version and one enrichment version of key tasks
- Scheduled at least one small-group pull session with the students who need the most support
